Just Watched the Wizards DVD with Ralphs comentary. He never mentions Vaughn Bode but his characters look very similar. "Peace" looks like a cross between Bode and Mobeus, Elinor is a "Bode Broad" and the Good Wizard has a huge hat and big feet like Cheech Wizard. Anyone else agree???

I remember reading a while back that Bakshi was inspired by Bode...i mean, it really isn't any suprise...many were inspired by him...but more-so the original graffiti artists/scene here in New York.

I dont doubt it, but I found it strange he never mentions him at all during his (Bakshi's) commentary during the video.

If you want to move this question its ok by me. By the way Bode died in 1975 right before Wizards came out .I think he was 34, it was very sad, a tragic crazy nightmare.

This was brought up earlier on the board.
Bakshi was not inspired by Bode on Wizards -- Bode was just a friend of his.
The inspiration for the film comes from various sources -- old sketches, the world around Bakshi, but not from Vaughn Bode.
It should also be noted that Cheech Wizard was not actually a wizard, but an old hippie. |

You know this discussion is really intriguing to me. Really intriguing. For me, the question of inspiration/influence is very interesting. It is almost impossible to be a sensitive human being, aware of your surroundings and not to be greatly inspired by everything within/without you. I suppose it is all in how you filter it through the synthesis of your own creative muse that stirs us emotionally.
In my opinion, the greatest creative works have been those that most intimately reflected the personality and passions of the creator at a particular moment in time and which touched our shared personalities and passions along that very same razor's edge. Those passions can not happen in a vacuum (otherwise they'd be inaccessible to us) and too often we forget that artists are whole people living full lives outside of our own narrow viewing scope and hence have opportunity for myriad influences in their lives.
Ultimately, it is a moot point. Yes, some influences seem more prevalent than others but sometimes two or more artists are simply influenced by the same root source material. Cause and effect are nervous, edgy birds, flittering around the cages of the subconscious, spewing forth droppings and errant feathers with equal ardor (only one of which you would actually desire to weave into your sweetheart's hair). That Bode and Bakshi were friends at the time made a unity of awareness that I am sure colored the work of each without necessarily being an overt influence on either.
That being the case, I don't think it so odd that RB doesn't mention Bode. He also makes no mention of Goya, Bosch, Soutine, Bobby Sands, the Sandinistas or strawberry flavored Jell-o in there either, but I'm pretty sure that with varying degrees of relevance each was a part of the environment of that creative nurturing time - the societal context that colored in some way the output by omission/comission or simple background flutter.
As was Bode...
