You know since Tim Burton used to be an animator, I bet he'll use Bakshi's style for the Cool World remake but with a gothic touch.

I thought the scenery 2 Cool World was pretty gothic already...the designs Barry Jackson contributed 2 the set were surrealistic and dark...

The film contains undertones (if u watch the film carefully)...so if anybody were 2 come close 2 what was supposed 2 b original, I would agree Tim Burton comes pretty close, but Tim is not so much of a "political" director, if u know what I mean....u would need someone with that 'wink' in their eye like John Waters...i would imagine a Cool World remake would need a combination of both characteristics, just 2 keep it from losing what was intended in the first place.

Yep -- his first work in a major motion picture was as an inbetween artist on the original animated film version of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, directed by Ralph Bakshi.

Have you seen "Vincent"?

Also, Burton employed Henry Sellick to animate TNBC. Some of his early work is worth checking out too, like "Slow Bob".

You know, if Renny Harlin did a Cool World remake; he'll just mix the Barry Jackson designs with some MTV styles.

hmmm??? ...I think at this point, I would only want 2 c Ralph push foward what he originally invisioned if he had the opportunity...there was an "original" script that was thrown out, only Ralph could concieve what was lost.

Just to let you know Renny Harlin did had some experiences directing horror movies; he did A Nightmare on Elm Street 4, Deep Blue Sea, and Exorcist: The Beginning.

That's cool, but I don't think I would want 2 c a remake if Ralph didn't have control over what exactly was going on the second time around.

I bet Ralph Bakshi could tell Renny Harlin about what he originally planned for Cool World and I think he'll give Bakshi credit for the story and the original screenplay.

Our ranks are increasing rapidly and this is a great place to get adult (though very cartoonlike) conversation.

Brother Rabbit-

Thank you for making me feel so welcomed. The thing is I just don't think I am old enough to be a member on this web site. Most of Mr. Bakshi's movies are for adults, and Cool World is the only movie of his I've ever seen. But thanks again for your kindness.

Pondering this, I wonder how I truly feel on whether I'd like a remake or not. Surface says yeah I'd dig it, but truthfully, probably not as much as I'd like. I definitely wouldn't from any other director (even from people I like), but even from RB, a remake seems like a peculiar artistic choice. Don't get me wrong, sometimes a re-edit can be instructive - like Touch of Evil - now that was cool with me and if RB's initial vision of Cool World was simply edited away after the fact, then perhaps a Director's cut would be enlightening and welcome. But an out and out remake... nah. Why walk that road again?

On the other hand now... a re-telling... that's different. Kind of like how Visions of Cody and On the Road were retelling a time period in JK's fictionalized version of his life. They had different intents. Different purposes, different perspectives and voices and brought a different experiental bent to the tale. Now, THAT kind of approach could be cool. I'd be on board with something that would explore it like that.

But why tinker in the past? Remaking Fritz, Traffic or even Wizards would be patentedly silly without a ravishing new perspective - without growth. Cool World would be the same. I don't care who directs it.

Which is why (in contrast) I think Wizards II can be such a vital film project. The subject, theme, characterization and tone are as current as embedded reporters, patriot acts and general insurgency. It is a story that is freakishly alive! It is neither history nor nostalgia...

...it is continuance.

But I still think Cool World should be remade, as long as Tim Burton directs it because I bet Burton knows what horror and what Bakshi's original vision truly is.

This may have been mentioned elsewhere but given the tendency these days of directors to fix up their previous films (steven S's "ET" revision, "Rocketship XM" additions) to get them to what they "really" wanted.

Could COOL WORLD as we know it be "tweaked"? The story is definitely interesting and a lot works fine as is, but some of the underlying "logic" could be expounded on by some of the animated characters in either existing or brief new scenes just so folks watching it get the point (the last part of the film is kinda where all hell breaks loose - it's never explained why Holly can go through walls as a Toon but not as a person). And a few technicial glitches could be fixed up as well (some matte misalignments, etc.)?

Having worked in Digital Effects and animation for many years, it is definitely possible and for not all that much money. The result could be a "Cool World" special edition!

Just a thought.....
