MovieTome.com:http://imdb.com/title/tt0109479/

You Guys Should See This Film!

I am serious. Some might dismiss it, because we all know the animation is what we think of, when we think of Bakshi. But I know there's some of us out there that really appreciate a passionate story. I think, soap-opera acting aside, the realness, of this movie speaks for itself.

There was a less-than-kind review of Mr. Bakshi's live action love story. Heavy posted a link here:

http://ralphbakshi.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=338&highlight=reviews

I am just going to say, I feel that there are some scenes in this film that capture the essence of what we've seen throughout the other films in his repertoire.
The emotions and statements of love and truth in this picture, brought me to tears. It truely is a moving work. You just have to get past Sliverstone's acting.

Also, a sidenote to Kat, have you seen this? If not, you in particular need to. This is the story of Michael and Rosyln. You also get a glimpse of Mr. Bakshi's concept of Crazy Shapiro, in the character named Crazy in this film. (Not as pleasant a loon as the Crazy we're fond of in Hey Good Lookin', which I think I am becoming the editor for at MovieTome.com)
Cool and the Crazy on

I just need to include this quote:

"We're all saps..." - Michael (Cool and the Crazy)

This is from my favorite scene in the film. I am most likely going to watch it again tonight or tomorrow. It is a signed copy of the DVD I got on the site's store. (It was WELL WORTH the $30 Very Happy )

I think I'll post screenshots later. I have some of these scenes still lodged in my mind today. Very powerful cinematography. Very reminicent of the animation films. And this one scene where Crazy has to pay Joey a buck for being a "smooth" guy. He's laying on the ground and his hand shoots up into the scene with a dollar in it. It reminded me so much of Crazy from HGL'. He also rides around basically hanging halfway out of the beautiful convertible they drive throughout the film. So many of these characters put me in mind of the characters throughout Bakshi's films.

Thank You Mr. Bakshi for This Film.

I'm very interested in seeing this film, despite the bad reviews. The storyline sounds like the kind of thing I might be into. And besides, any film that Bakshi writes AND directs is always excellent!

I have this one too and I'm afraid I don't have many kind words for it...

While the art direction, the cinematography and the overall look of the film is good, the whole thing is a bit boring to watch (or maybe I don't have the right background to apreciate it more...).

After a while, you're unable to feel any kind of sympathy for the principal characters (they're really very immature and annoying) and the whole thing becomes a mess.

I think this film is partially autobiographical and there are moments of brilliance throughout but not enough to rise it above average...

Sorry for the nasty words but maybe I need to watch it again...

Definietly watch it again. And watch Hey Good Lookin and Heavy Traffic first.
Those films definitely set up the atmosphere for the live action film's storyline.

Of coarse we don't mind your comments. We don't want people lying just to be a part of the group. Be yourself... Speak your mind... That is the key to a Bakshi Board members' joy. (just don't be disrespectful, and you never have been Heavy)

Thanks for understanding!

I will definitely do that next time!

BTW, what is Ralph input on this one?

I'll try and buy this film sometime soon because I haven't seen it for rent anywhere near me.

I have to agree with you Heavy. This film was not good, Bakshi's worst, in my opinion. But this is just my point of view and I'm not trying to be disrespectful to the Bakshi crew.

Anyhoo, here is an EXTREMELY funny review about the Cool and the Crazy! Take this in good humor! This is one of the funniest reviews I've ever read!

My copy of the DVD finally arrived in the mail today, loved it. Cool as hell; the soundtrack was fantastic; production values aren't the best, but what the hell, it ain't like a studio would ever finance a Bakshi film. Good movie, overall.

From the review:
Quote:
"That's a really great drawing, Sarah. I like how it has a ceiling, unlike our set."

Last I recall, films have something called a STORY that you usually pay attention to?

Quote:
"Does this look like a kitty to you? Damn."

Ever hear of beatnik art?

Sorry -- I took an extreme dislike to this guy immediately upon beginning to read this review. I began to care less about what he thought of the film after reading those two stupid comments he placed under screen captures from the film.

There will always be Bakshi critics. I just hope he remembers all his supporters are here wishing him well in his endeavors. Smile

Just watched this again fairly recently -- did anyone notice how much room there was at the top and bottom of the screen? It seems like it might have been framed for a theatrical (1.85:1) aspect ratio. Was it originally shot with the intention that it be shown in theaters? Does anyone know anything about this?

The Movie Channel is going to be showing this a few times this month. They've just started airing the old films from the Rebel Highway series (a failed attempt to relaunch American International Pictures with some '50s-themed movies sharing the same titles--but not the same plots--of some films that AIP produced way-back-when).

If anyone hasn't seen this film yet, check it out. It's really a great one. I can't believe it's not more well-known or well-liked.

I also want to see the other films that aired as a part of this series. I'm especially excited to see Robert Rodriguez's contribution, Roadracers. They're playing all of the films from the series on the 24th:

Cool

Thanks for the great info Isaac.

I own this, and love it, but those of you who haven't seen it, definitely have a great opportunity here. (check your local listings Wink )
