| Quote: | | JKS thanks for reminding about Bruce Campbell because I like his film Army of Darkness and I also like the Sam Raimi proced film Boogeyman. |
I believe Army of Darkness was Sam Raimi's film, not his. Although he does deserve credit for the film being made, only because he's so cool. My friend met him once. It was at his book signing for If Chins Could Kill. My friend had a bag of chips and Mr. Campbell said that he liked that brand. My friend regrets not offering him those chips, it's something that has haunted him for a while. Anywho, I don't like it when people call a fim a (insert actor's name here) movie. Example: One stupid chick once said that Edward Scissorhands was the best Johnny Depp movie she's seen. It's not a Johnny Depp movie, it's a Tim Burton film, dumbass. Uh, I think we're going a bit off-subject here. |

Getting back on subject, Cool World was actually my first Bakshi film. I was a young guy when I first saw it, didn't remember much of it, but when I really started getting into Bakshi's work, I decided to check it out again, only I didn't know I saw it a first time, I rented it, with very low expectations, and I fufilled those very low expectations.
It's not a bad movie, but it's not that good, either. The film's story is one of the worst I've seen on film, the animation doesn't have the heart and soul of Bakshi's earlier works, but there are some good elements, like the directing, and the animation is good, after all.
It's not a film I'd recommend to someone who's never seen a Bakshi film before, and it's not something that I think is worth purchasing, but it does have some quaint charms of its own that make it worth checking out.
And, you know, I fully understand the reasons why this film doesn't work, and, you know, I hope that the next time Bakshi tries to do a film like this, if he tries to do a film like this, he'll get the film he wanted, and not another Cool World.
The film that I want to see is Bakshi's original vision for the project that eventually became this, uh...thing....Cool World could have been the Fritz the Cat of the '90s, the movie that got Ralph's career moving again, if there hadn't been those major struggles that formed the film that got made. |

| I don't care what anyone says, call me crazy if u want, but I still like this film...I appreciate how a lot of the animation was a highlighted return from the rotoscoping, and I still like the concept(s)...However, I wouldn't reccomend it as a Bakshi first watch 2 anyone 4 obvious reasons. |

It was just on HBO a few minutes ago...this sounds funny, but my Grandmother who watches movies all day long...(about 60+ yrs of age) she loves this film...always has...and she was actually partially responsible 4 picking up on the "subtleties" in the film...always descibing 'Cool World' as "....having a lot of hidden logic behind it"...I think what she's been talking about is the 'Bakshi'-side of the film.
Like I said, she watches cable all day...and it's rare when she actually comments about something she just watched was good/or she enjoyed.
Bakshi's original script was a loss, but Bakshi didn't lose his film...he's a fighter. "Holly-Wood if she could"...get it?
This just striked me...if this film came out today, exactly the way it was (yes, the result)...I feel people would have appreciate it more, and been more engaged in it...because it does make sense when u think about it's logic...very reflective of what people do 2 themselves today...(and this was also a reaction from some more reviews I found on Amazon by people finally picking up on it recently)...this film came out during a time when everyone was pretty much dillusional (1992, hello).
I'm dreading tonight because the Oscars or coming on tele this evening, and I know my Grandmother will b watching this all night...and that just gave me this thought on what's happening 2 films now...a lot of these films that will b getting nominated are mediocre-budget independent flicks...not Hollywood films...and there were several reports in the news this week on how "Hollywood" was out-of-sync with the general public...we all know Hollywood has really lost it ages ago, we're just experiencing the fallout.
...It's just the sign of the times man. |

I just watched Cool World again. First time I've seen it since I was a little kid, so I guess you could consider it my first time all over again since it means different things to me now.
I have to say I love the first part of the film. The parts in animation are not bad at all. The film goes downhill once it goes back to reality and Holly becomes "real". It was just too shitty from that point on for my taste. I still will vouche for the film to be seen by those who have not seen it...if for the first half alone. _________________ http://circlewithadot.net , http://nuclear-boy.com |

I'd enjoy reading Bakshi's original script of COOL WORLD to better understand what got lost, and found, in translation.
As it is, parts of CW have nice interaction and character (Nails, Holly, Harris and Dweebes (especially the latter in superhero form)). Other parts feel unfinished or drag out way too long. Still, CW remains one of my more watched DVD's. _________________ 2D ain't ded yet! |

| Well, it's been years since I first watched Cool World and I just finished it. I haven't seen this film since I was like, 12. Well, it is both appealing and questionable. The visuals and imagery is where the film gets an A+, the story on the other hand just wasn't that interesting and I wish they set this somewhere else instead of Las Vegas. Not a bad film overall, but not something I would watch regulary. |
