In your third film, Coonskin. There are three cops that go after Brother Rabbit: Manigan, Ruby (or Rudy) and..... A BLACK GUY!!! Why exactly is a black cop hanging with two racists white cops?
Note: While the three of them are stopping by places the rabbit went, they visit a bar where these guys are playing dice. When they start some trouble, the bartender, who is black as is everybody else in the bar, pulls out a gun. But then the black cop prevents him from doing anything. The bartender gives him a funny look. |

| Does the phrase "Uncle Tom" mean anything to you? |

Among other issues in Coonskin I was exploring or presenting - There was a problem in the police department where black cops had to suppress black citizens some quit - some just didn't give a shit. So the cop hanging around with Mannigan wasn't really black - he just looked black. |

There is a great song about the Uncle Tom issue on the new NAS album, Steet's Disciple, called "These Are Our Heros".
You rap fans should check it out.
I love that the black cop was added. It really did add an element that these, set in stone, attitudes about race relations that were being portrayed in the film were actually blurred social concepts that were already beginning to lose their hold on the American psychy. Mannigan was obviously a racist, but in a way so was the black cop that accompanied him. Was it the skin or the status that was causing the lines to be drawn? It couldn't be the skin. It must have been something else? (hmmm) _________________ Last Days of Coney Island Kickstarter | Bakshi Media Page | Bakshi's Official Facebook
